Devices, hardware and operating systems

Digital confidence starts with understanding what your device is doing. You do not need to become a technician; you need a practical mental model that helps you make informed choices and solve ordinary problems.

A device is a system

A computer, tablet or smartphone combines physical components with software. The physical components are hardware: the processor carries out instructions, memory holds information while work is in progress, and storage keeps files and applications when the device is switched off.

The operating system coordinates the device. It manages hardware, files, applications, user accounts, permissions and the interface you interact with. Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux, Android and iOS are examples of operating systems.

Applications and permissions

An application is software designed for a task: writing a document, browsing the web, editing an image or communicating with other people. Applications depend on the operating system and may request access to your camera, microphone, location or files.

Treat permission requests as decisions. Ask whether the access makes sense for the feature you want. A video-call application needs camera access during a call; a simple calculator usually does not. Review permissions periodically and remove access that is no longer needed.

Maintenance is part of digital literacy

Operating-system and application updates can fix security weaknesses, correct defects and improve compatibility. Install updates through built-in settings or official application stores. Keep backups of important files, and avoid downloading installers from unfamiliar advertisements or file-sharing pages.

When something goes wrong, describe the symptoms before changing settings: what did you expect, what happened, when did it begin, and does the issue affect one application or the whole device? A clear description makes troubleshooting safer and more effective.

Put it into practice

Map one device you use

  1. Name the device and identify its operating system.
  2. Choose one application and describe the task it helps you complete.
  3. Review that application's permissions. Keep only access that is needed for its features.

What is the operating system's main role?

The operating system manages the device's resources and provides the environment in which applications run. It does not guarantee that every application is trustworthy.
